Mathematics Department
Welcome to the Mathematics Department of St. Aloysius Gonzaga Secondary School.
The importance of mathematics in career choices cannot be over emphasize, as the knowledge gained in learning mathematics is applied across different field and to this reason most of countries has made mathematics compulsory up to certain level in there education system, Some amended there education acts to ensure some form of mathematics is compulsory up to 18years in order to spur the development of different sectors of economy. And this applies even to Kenya as a Nation Where Mathematics is compulsory up to Form four, in which the average age of the learner is about 18 years.
Despite being a compulsory Subject in our education system (8.4.4), most students have a negative attitude towards the subject and lack prerequisite skills in the subject. As a department, we have put in place programmes such as daily mathematics quizzes, group work, peer teaching, exposing learners to internal and external contests and symposiums, among many others and approaches to enable learners to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills.
Our major aim is to demystify mathematics, motivate students to like it and aim very high in the subject. The commitment and dedication of the teachers who are putting a lot of effort into the supervision of students and increasing contact hours are great. This has resulted in a marked improvement in the subject's performance. The learners have also acquired a positive attitude towards the subject. And at the beginning of this year, 2025, Business Studies was calculated in Mathematics as one of the subjects in the Department.
The major focused in business studies this year has been on ways of motivating learners in selecting Business studies as one of their elective subjects, since it has a foundation that many careers are anchored on.
